Hollywood isn’t typically what you’d consider original. With the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises ending in the near future, execs have been dying to find the next big book-to-film franchise. A lot of fantasy series have been given a shot, and most have received lackluster reviews/earnings. Most haven’t been given the chance for a sequel. Even the Chronicles of Narnia films were lucky to get their third go-around after the second one under-performed in a major way, causing Disney to hand the project off to another studio. So what’s the big deal going to be about now? Looks like it’s going to be The Hunger Games trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins.
Here we have our very first look at Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role of Katniss Everdeen on the cover of this week’s Entertainment Weekly. The article inside supposedly has more photos, so you can expect to find those online in the near future. For a better look at the cover, click here.
I’ve got some mixed feelings about this franchise. Part of me is excited to see it brought to life on the big screen, and part of me can’t forget how much the third book blew. Oh, the artistic liberties I hope they take with that film. Some of the casting choices seem odd to me as well, but I can’t hate on that until I actually see everyone in action. Jennifer Lawrence looks pretty kickass in this picture, though, which is getting me a bit psyched.
The first film in the trilogy will be released March 23, 2012.
